For the last 13 years the Burchards spend every available moment they had at their lake home at 809 Old Mill Rd. Here is their story:
"WE LOVE OUR HOME AT LAKE ANNA
We did not so much as find our family home at Lake Anna as it found us. We were less than five minutes away looking at another home when our realtor mentioned a house that had come on the market but she was hesitant to show it to us. The only thing she knew about it was that it was in fact, an original lake cottages. We were intrigued and had to see it right away.
When her car pulled off the pavement onto the gravel of Old Mill Road, we both looked at each otherA it had the off the beaten path feel that we wanted but had not realized in the planned subdivision homes with large yards and vinyl siding that we spent our morning numbingly walked through.
Luckily, the for sale sign was posted or she would have passed it... we turned down the drive and the first thing we saw was the water. Looking over the single story roof line you can see the most picturesque part of the lake right in front of you. It got better as we drove up - the view from the house became more apparent. From most any room - we could see the lake!
WHY LAKE ANNA
We decided to look at Lake Anna for some obvious reasons: it was close compared to other weekend getaways, it had a reputation as a family destination and it was a laid back place. We agreed as a couple on what we were looking for: a wooded lot on the water, great views in every direction, quick access to the main part of the lake, low maintenance and no more than 90 minutes door to door. We were clear on a what we wanted- a quest for a lifestyle.
What we were looking for was based on our own childhood memories and experiences of growing up on the water. Mine was a combination of spending family vacations at lake cottages in Canada and boy scout camps in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
My wife's experience was summers at her grandparents retirement home on Lake Jordan, AL and family vacations on the many back bays of lower Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
Those childhood memories were of some of the best times with family and friends for both of us. We wanted to be able to create a lifestyle for our growing family and have the opportunity to invite our extended families and friends for long weekends and vacations together.
THE LKA EXPERIENCE
Living part-time at Lake Anna is pure joy for our family. We cannot wait to get here and on Sunday nights when it is time to leave, we are sad to be heading up our gravel drive heading toward the highway. Half way up - one more look in the mirror of the best view of the lake anywhere. We console ourselves with the fact that we will be back in no more than five days and spend the next few minutes of drive time planning our return.
Our children have grown up here. Our neighbors have become life-long friends. Those who reside here full-time keep an eye on our home and quickly send an email after inclement weather telling us that they have checked our home and all is okay.
It is a place to gather to celebrate. Our neighbors who reside in other parts of Virginia and Maryland begin sending emails making inquiry as to who is planning to be at the lake over a particular long weekend right after the first of every year with the first sizable gatherings starting at spring break and then Easter weekend. The first "official" party is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. A family member observed during our first year on the lake that "every weekend has the excitement of the fourth of July" and that is one of the reason our kids love LKA.
Neighbors take turns hosting parties on the big summer weekends, are quick to invite you or your children to go for a boat ride, tubing or wake board. Three of our children were taught to water ski and wake board by willing, encouraging neighbors and their older kids who had an "awesome" ski boat and the latest equipment.
LKA is also a place to decompress from work and school. Our favorite time is our chill time on the dock. We worked hard to make the house as maintenance free as possible so our time could be spent with each other.
Owning a second home on the lake has been a wonderful opportunity to make memories and share experiences with those closest to us. We hope the next owners will experience the same happiness and be able to look back as fondly as our family and friends have during our time as owners at Lake Anna. "
