Exterior Front Cabin

Exterior Front Cabin

Amazing and historical, the old Howard Hughes Estate has over 500' of Lake Tahoe frontage, and over 5.5 acres - a true legacy and rare offering, now called Summertide. A pier, buoy and guest cottage make this a lifestyle choice for some lucky person. Panoramic views are balanced by a large meadow, and natural gardens including sculptures and a landscape stream. Similar to the Great Camps of the Adirondacks the main home, an authentic log cabin likely built from timber on the land, is nestled in forest of 100 year old trees overlooking the lake. Summertide was created by Tasker and Daisy Oddie. Oddie, originally a New York lawyer, became known as The King of Tonopah for the rich silver mine he owned in central Nevada. He was elected the 12th Governor of Nevada in 1912, then United States Senator in 1920. He assembled the land and built the main house in the mid-1920s. Summertide was later purchased by a man from England who went by the name of Bill Wellesley in Nevada but, in actuality, was Lord Christian Arthur Wellesley, 4th Earl Cowley, a peer of the realm and a descendent of the Duke of Wellington. He also owned a cattle ranch in the Washoe Valley which was later acquired by Governor Bob Lists family. By 1950, Summertide was in the hands of Howard Hughes, who entertained, to say the least, a wide variety of guests from President Kennedy to Marilyn Monroe. The current owners acquired Summertide from the Howard Hughes Company in 1995 as their principal, year-round, residence. While protecting the character and authenticity of the land and buildings, the current owners completely upgraded the kitchen and bathrooms of the main house together with the mechanical and electrical systems in 1995. Eight furniture makers from the Adirondacks designed and custom made furniture and fixtures in the 1920s Rustic style. A meadow surrounded by gardens was added to create recreation and entertainment spaces for as many 250 people for lunch or dinner and even more for a reception.
